Dr. Oanh Nguyen named Chief of ZSFG Hospital Medicine

Dr. Oanh Nguyen has been named the new chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine at ZSFG, effective November 1, 2024. Oanh is an Associate Professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at ZSFG, and a hospital medicine physician deeply committed to advancing care in safety-net settings and serving historically marginalized communities.

Oanh received her BS degree from UCLA and her MD from UCSD. She then went on to residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, coming to UCSF for a fellowship in primary care, during which she also earned a Masters of Advanced Study in Clinical Research. After beginning her faculty career at UT Southwestern and Parkland Hospital, one of the nation’s largest safety-net hospitals, she returned to UCSF as a faculty member in 2018.

As a health services researcher steeped in epidemiology and implementation science, Oanh’s research seeks to advance health equity by using rigorous methods to evaluate healthcare system innovations. Her work, sponsored by the NIH and private foundations, focuses on care transitions, addressing unmet social needs that affect health, and examining the impact of health policies on access to treatment such as dialysis, inpatient addiction care, and diabetes medications. Oanh received the Society of Hospital Medicine’s Junior Investigator Award and was named a Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Investigator, supporting her work leading one of the largest randomized controlled trials in the U.S. examining the effectiveness of guaranteed income on housing stability and health outcomes for families experiencing homelessness.

Oanh also serves as the Co-Director of Academic Development and Scholarship for the DHM, Scholarship Coach for UCSF Health’s Learning Health Systems initiative, ZSFG Liaison to the UCSF CTSI Participant Recruitment Program, and Deputy Editor of the Journal of Hospital Medicine.

In her new chief role, Oanh looks forward to fostering collaboration, advancing equitable, high-quality, evidence-based care, and supporting operational excellence and innovation to shape the future of hospital medicine.

Welcome Oanh!
