Education

Teaching Medicine ResidentsThe Division of Hospital Medicine plays an important role in the education of medical students and residents at ZSFG. Divisional members attending on the Resident Inpatient Service (RIS) provide sixty percent of the teaching and supervisory staffing time yearly on this service. As the single largest divisional presence on the Resident Inpatient Service, ZSFG DHM members help deliver consistent messages and education on important inpatient topics, including quality and safety in the inpatient setting, multidisciplinary teamwork, and safe transitions of care.

RIS attendings also proctor procedures and teach the use of Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) to trainees. In addition to their activities on the RIS, DHM members host residents and medical students on the Faculty Inpatient Service, where they teach about medical co-management and consultation through a partnership with the ZSFG Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Lastly, DHM members hold many educational leadership positions in the Department and School of Medicine, from medical student coaches in the UCSF Bridges Curriculum to Associate Course Director in the SOM and from Residency Advisor to Associate Residency Program Director. DHM is also home to four members of the UCSF Debas Academy of Medical Educators, as well as the recipients of many teaching awards.
