Dr. Anil N. Makam, MD, MAS named Director of Analytics and Research

Dr. Anil N. Makam is an Associate Professor in Residence at UCSF and a nationally recognized health services researcher dedicated to advancing hospital-based care for vulnerable populations. His work bridges clinical practice, health systems, and policy to improve care delivery and outcomes. 

Key Highlights of Expertise and Leadership:

  • Data-Driven Insights in Hospital Medicine: Dr. Makam leverages electronic health record (EHR) and administrative data and epidemiologic research methods to address questions in hospital medicine, geriatrics, and post-acute care, with work that informs hospital care delivery and policy.
  • Commitment to Mentorship and Academic Development: Serves as an Inquiry Advisor in the UCSF School of Medicine’s Inquiry Curriculum, where he advises up to a 100 medical students at a time on their approach to scholarship. He is Co-Director of UCSF CTSI’s K-Grant Writing Workshop, where he has achieved a 70% NIH funding success rate for junior faculty, twice the national average.
  • Immediate Priorities: Will focus on building the infrastructure to support evidence-driven operations, quality improvement, and scholarship that advances patient care, health equity, medical education, and operational efficiency, including the DREAM Core (Data for Research, Evaluation, and Analytics in hospital Medicine)

The DREAM Core will be a robust analytics core to support the Division. Dr. Makam will lead this effort in collaboration with Sasha Skinner, our newly appointed DHM Data Analyst. Together, they will enhance the Division’s analytics capabilities and foster the development of a learning health system.
